Meet our 2021 Artists in Residence!

Writing, filmmaking, visual arts, creative communication, Dentro La Terra’s 2021 residency programme will expand its scope, with three residents that will have time and space to work in these fields, as well as opportunities to interact with our community, other cultural initiatives and the diverse facets of life in Abruzzo.

After the challenges created by the pandemic in 2020, Dentro La Terra will have the enourmous privilege to host these remarkable female talents between May and September 2021. Depending on travel restrictions we will be confirming on these pages the exact dates of arrival of each resident.

WHAT IS DENTRO LA TERRA?

Dentro La Terra is a residency programme where creators, writers, researchers and thinkers from various disciplines can stay for short or longer periods, depending on their needs and availability, either alone or as small collectives, to find the time, space and a serene atmosphere for their creation and to propose initiatives engaging local and global communities.

WHERE IS IT?

The residency programme is hosted in the village of Arielli (+/- 1,100 inhabitants) nestled in the Central-Italian region of Abruzzo, about 15 kilometers from both the Adriatic Sea and the foothills of the Majella mountain. Accomodation and work-spaces are situated in a palazzo, which was long owned by wealthy local landowners, with some parts dating back to the 16th century. Stretching out over three floors, it is surrounded by a large garden overlooking a forested valley, offering privacy and inspiration while being in the village center. It underwent an extensive renovation in 2018 and is now ready to welcome guests. It is called “Dentro la Terra” in honor of the colloquial expression used by the locals to refer to the historic center.

HOW CAN I JOIN?

Dentro La Terra receives applications all year round. Selected resident(s) are announced every year between January and March.

WHAT IS the GOAL of this PROJECT?

We want to ensure that while the beauty of our land becomes ever more recognized and known, even a small village in the middle of rural central Italy can become part of - and contribute to - relevant global conversations and initiatives.

Dentro La Terra is conceived as a platform connecting the social, economic and natural diversities of our area with global conversations and creating opportunities for mutually beneficial exchanges and contamination.

The renovation of an ancient palazzo and its mixed use for commercial holiday rentals and artists retreat is meant to create these opportunities for artistic and cultural growth, as well as for the regeneration of the historic center of the village of Arielli, colloquially referred to as Dentro La Terra.
